About Yummy Stuff Founder, Susan Morin
While mentoring a local middle school student, Yummy Stuff’s founder, Susan Morin, realized that her hungry student wasn’t able to concentrate and simply was unable to learn. She further found that many of the students in this and other Title 1 schools lacked proper nutrition and access to healthy foods at school and at home. Morin decided to request a donation of 400 pieces of fresh fruit from a local produce supplier who did agreed to do this every week. Morin still loads her own car and delivers the fruit weekly to the school where it is then distributed to the students. Thus began her personal mission to help kids know about and practice healthy eating. With this program in place, Morin decided to take another step in creating a “pizza garden”. Soliciting donations on behalf of the schools from national corporations and support from the University of Southern Florida/New College, Morin built the garden and maintains it with volunteer college and middle school students. To raise money for the garden, Morin is building a brick pathway using donated bricks so she can ask for donations that provide engraved donor names on each sponsored brick.
Another Yummy Stuff project, Healthy Pantry, came about when Morin learned that any student who arrived late to school (for any reason) would be denied food from the cafeteria. Knowing that this meant a student might not have eaten for over 18 hours, she created the healthy pantry which stocks healthy food for such emergencies. This first Healthy Pantry is supported by donations from community associations and private donors.
Helping to combat childhood obesity and all its related ailments such as diabetes and heart disease, Morin is passionate about doing something to dramatically reduce these avoidable tragedies. Yummy Stuff is Morin’s effort to spread a message of “Eat Smart to Be Smart” to children and their families well past her Sarasota, FL area in hopes that thousands of kids can be guided to healthy and successful lives.
